Back and Trying All KINDS of NEW Stuff!!!

Well, not really.. Yall know I ain’t got dimes for that. :p

But I have been playing with my hair more.

One thing most natural know is after a time.. Your hair get boring…

Really… REALLLLLY boring!! I mean..tedious even!! I have gotten to a state where I don’t even want to wash or detangle or.. NOTHING my hair!  I DO occassionaly cowash my hair nowadays, so I was able to make that work… But most often when I cowash, I don’t bother to detangle..

Now some will say, well thatl’s good. You’re not manipulating your hair much. Helps with length retention.  But I’m pretty sure I end up breaking more hair when I DO comb it out because it gets tangled… But then again… It does seem to be longer… So.. Maybe my laziness is actually helping  me reach my length goals.

But enough of my laziness…  No I will not perm or cut my hair so it ain’t that kinda party. I had a friend suggest my hair would be so BEAUTIFUL flat ironed. And I was like girl.. just bye… LoL! So I still love my natural hair, but with Winter and dry forced heat, my hair is dry and crispy more often than not and my curls aren’t always plump and juicy unless they are wet, and honestly I’m sick of walkiing around with wet Jheri curl ass hair! LoL! So, with more length comes options..

And in comes banding.. Bands, will not ONLY make her dance, but they will stretch your fro out to  new lengths! I actually tried the banding as mini pineapples, but my hair isn’t long enough to really do it right. So instead of preserving my curls, it just made my hair really  REALLY big!! I  got more complements than I ever have because of that giant ass hair! Loved it.. My hair was soft and fluffy..

But the next week, I did my cowash and didn’t detangle and it wasn’t as big and as the days and weeks went on it just looked nappy (In a BAD unkept way.) and I was desperate.. I ACTUALLY tried a petroleum ladened product that I hate and twisted my hair with it.

And it wasn’t bad.. I mean that product still sucks, but the twists came out pretty good…

So in comes TWISTNG.. Which is what I’ve done this week.

But first.. My hair was dry.. Hard… Crunchy.. And that wasn’t the EcoStyler talking either!! My hair needed some moisture and TLC. Tresemme Naturals is great, but honestly I just needed something more moisturizing..

In comes products I don’t like..

PLus oil…

I mixed my Tresemme Moisture Rich Conditioner,  some Hello Hydration, vegeteble oil in my jar of  Soft n Free Milk Protein and Olive Oil. (There was still a little of it in the jar.) Once mixed I shampooed with my Loreal EverCReme, and applied Tresemme naturals to my freshly washed hair. I just felt I should get SOME moisture in there before I added this oil and silicone ladened mixture. I’m sorry I just don’t like cones. LoL! But to use up that stuff I’d risk it.. A little.

Well, at first it felt kinda bad.. So I was like.. OK.. This was a complete waste of my damn time. But since it was in there now, may as well settle in and let it work..

AND WORK IT DID!! When I rinsed it out, my hair was light and soft and felt really moisturized. So I was happy with that.

I decided I was going to twist my hair up this week. Not so much for a “twist out” but just to preserve and stretch my curls out a little. So right now, I sit in twists.

To twist, I used my trusty Long Aid Activator gel as a moisturizer, and Eco krystal for hold and definition. I haven’t added any oils yet, as on day one I never do. I actually can’t wait to see how my first “twist out” comes out.

I know this isn’t very interesting, but hopefully I’ll have some new products soon. I’ve been hearing about this Aunt Jackie stuff and it’s affordable AND available at get this… THE DOLLAR STORE!! Not sure if it’s around these parts yet, but I can’t wait to try it. Unlike Miss Jessie’s it is PETROLEUM FREE!! And just about 5-10 bucks a jar/bottle. I’m still not crazy about creamy stylers, but if I’m gonna be twisting now, I am willig to give a good Vaseline free product a fair shot. 🙂

I’ll upload some photos in a seperate post, as for SOME reason, I can’t do it here.. Seriously?

Anyway, photos to come. 🙂

Giving Co Washing a Second Try…

Yes, I know.. Last time it was a HOT ass mess, but this time I’m using a different conditioner and I don’t plan on doing it exclusively. I will still be shampooing when I feel I need it. But with the cooler weather and dry heat all around, I figure a little extra moisture couldn’t hurt.

When did all this start? Well, I got lazy actually. LoL! I went the whole weekend and did SQUAT to my hair. Come Monday, my hair was dirty and needed redoing. So having like an hour to get ready, I decided to just rinse with some conditioner and slather up with gel as best I could. Well, I got several compliments!! And I had a pretty good and easy hair week. Most days I just spritzed and maybe added a little oil and went. I was shocked every time I got a compliment!!

So, after watching one of those irksome Wen commercials,  I’m trying it out again. This time instead of using a cone filled conditioner like Aussie, I’m using my Tresemme Naturals which to my best knowledge is cone free. Plus I don’t use as many products as I did in the beginning. I was kind of worried about the Ecostyler not getting completely washed away, but it seems to be working pretty well. And my hair feels way more moisturized, obviously, than it did with even the WONDERFULLY perfect L’Oreal EverCreme shampoo. I think winter is the perfect time to try this again. So hopefully this will end well. 🙂

And product reviews!! I have tried a few more products! Some I reviewed on YouTube, but not on here, so look for those in the near future. Among the products I’ve been using I finally tried Eco Styler and fell in LOVE with it!! I’m also on ,as mentioned above, Tresemme Naturals and L’Oreal EverCreme shampoo. Both have been working wonders for my hair. I’ve examined my hair texture and came up with some interesting discoveries. Well, one discovery and came to a very peaceful conclusion. 🙂 So look for all those posts to come. 🙂

But for now, I am done. Thanks for Reading. 🙂

Jen

Couldn’t Hardly Wait!

And I’m glad I DIDN’T!! That could have been a DISASTER!

What am I going on about, you may ask… I decided to try the My DNA Honeybee Leave In tonight… I rinsed out my conditioner that had sat over night.. I was good as moisturized… So I said, “What the hay? It’s just a watery leave in, what harm can it do…”

Well… I spritzed my little Rebel up good… And this stuff started LATHERING!!! Yes, soap! Foam!! Stripping soapy FOAM!! My hair balled up in a matted knot! I made a video with the stuff in my hair, but I’m not sure if I’ll air it. (Translation: I was looking ROUGH!!!! LoL!) But it looked and felt, even SOUNDED like shampoo in my hair! It was the weirdest thing. And the way my hair felt, I was honestly SCARED that it had some how DAMAGED my hair! Oh yes.. It was that MAJOR!! There was no slip, no moisture, just… extreme matting of my hair

So, I had to rinse it out and cowash my hair to try and get some of the moisture back into my hair. I did this with my Tresemme and PRAYED my hair would feel ok after. And it feel just that.. “OK”. Nothing special. Normally my hair is super soft after an overnight condition, but that stuff just stripped all that right back out. It made my hair feel like the Herbal Essences Hello Hydration Shampoo n Conditioner 2 in 1. Now to be fair, the conditioner didn’t make my hair hard. I used it as my pre poo and I noticed my hair was actually pretty soft, which makes me wanna try it. It does have protein in it, so… I don’t know. Well, actually it has Corn Silk which I ASSUME is protein. That may have actually been the issue with the Honeybee Leave In, it may be high in protein. That would explain the hardness, but not the lather.

My hair actually feels pretty soft NOW after washing that product out of my hair so it didn’t do any damage I guess, but I obviously won’t use it again. A common complaint about the rest of the products is that being for curly/wavy/kinky hair, they have zero slip and aren’t moisturizing enough.Any product for those hair types- Especially for tightly curled hair have to be MOISTURIZING. We need all we can get. And that slip has to be there. No ifs ands or buts about it.

I’m sure these products work for someone, just not for ME. I still have yet to try the other 2 products they sent me, but as of now I am in no hurry. I know I won’t try them if I’m going somewhere. I have an appointment tomorrow.. Imagine if I’d tried this at the LAST MINUTE… Disaster.

So, I’ve gotten my first review out of the way, and it is not good. Which is a shame because these products were generously sent to me for free by the company and I was hoping I’d be able to give them a glowing review instead of this not so stellar one, but honesty is best. And honestly… I’m scared to try the other two products. LoL!

A little about my hair. My hair is 4a/3c if that matters at ALL. (Not really.) I’m low porosity.. VERY low porosity. LoL! Stuff will literally just sit on my hair, which may be why this product lathered. It says you can use it on wet or dry hair. I’m scared to try it again on dry hair. 😦 I can’t handle protein. If these products are high in protein (I won’t know because they didn’t include an ingredients list. Which also annoyed me. You know how we naturals are. We like to know. I searched the site up and down (http://mydnaisuniversal.com)  and I found NOTHING. The ingredients are on the full sized products, but.. Obviously.. Not buying that.

So, in short this product didn’t work for me at all. It may work for you. I’d try for a free sample if possible. The products aren’t SUPER expensive but they aren’t cheap either. This leave in is $14.99 for 8oz. Honestly this is too rich for my blood. When water works great as my leave in, I can’t see spending nearly $15 for a liquidy spray unless this stuff was the pure-T JUNK! And.. Just.. NO.. Not for me. But it may work for you. If you’re feeling brave hit them up and give it a go. Who knows? You may find your new favorite product.

That is all..

Surprise in My Mailbox!! (My DNA!!)

Yep, I received some products in the mail today. My DNA is Universal products from Universal Beauty Products. I received The Monoi de Tahiti Moisture Rich Shampoo, the Shea Monoi de Tahiti Detangling conditioner, and the Honeybee Leave In conditioner. Three nice sized samples, 2 oz each.

OK. I haven’t used the products yet. I got them after I washed my hair and had it soaking with conditioner, so it will be at least next week before I try them. All I have for you now is that they are really thick and rich as far as I can feel and they smell pretty good. They kinda smell like Cream of Nature shampoo. (Thanks Elle for nailing that fragrance!) It’s not the BEST fragrance in the world, but far from the worst. I’m pretty sure it won’t linger in your hair… PRETTY sure.

I may (MAY!!!) spray a little of the leave in in my hair when I wash my conditioner out just to be doing something, but I really wanna try all the products together. I WISH they had included their Shea Monoi Honey Butter. I think that would have rounded the test off a little better, but beggers can’t be chosers.

Up front, I don’t like that the company is so secretive about ingredients. Several posters on NaturallyCurly.com have had similar issues with the company and I find that a bit off putting. I did get to see the ingredients on Elle’s YouTube review and noticed the leave in does contain Sodium Hydroxide. Some say it’s just a preservative, I say it’s Sodium Hydroxide.. It won’t stop me from trying the product, but it is what it is. These products all contain honey I believe as well. I have nothing against honey, but someone might. You never know. It’s not a sin, but it is just a little iffy when  a company makes it hard to get hold of an ingredients list. You wonder, what y’all hiding? I don’t know..

But ANYWAY, that will be a review for next week. Hopefully I can get that up over the weekend. NEXT weekend.. LoL! But for now, that’s all I can say for this product. 🙂

Evolution…

Don’t worry, it’s not THAT evolution I’m talking about. I’m talking about the evolution of our HAIR at different points of the journey. It really is amazing.

You start with deciding not to relax anymore or straighten your hair. You are just sick of it and you are ready to embrace what you were born with, knowing that it is perfect just as it is..  You probably feel pretty confident at this point. You know what you want, and right now..Your hair… Is EASY.. Yes, it’s still relaxed to the scalp!!! But you feel natural already and you are EMPOWERED! All your products still work, all your techniques still work.. You are doing great!  Kudos!

Then that new growth starts getting longer and you hit a big snag. Your products probably still work, but you notice those roots are a little difficult to deal with. Still, your new growth isn’t that long…

And then it IS LONGER.. Now.. Not everyone has this experience. some people just big chop at this point. Get it over with. But some don’t want the no hair look, so they do what is called transitioning. And all that is, is growing out your relaxer until you have enough hair to comfortably cut it off. Still some never really “big” chop. They do a series of mini chops, trims really. And that is fine too. Do what ever makes you comfortable. Just stick with it. It will be worth it..

If you’re transitioning, your journey has a whole different set of hardships. You have two extremely different textures and as time goes by, if you’re not careful, you start looking a little busted. You’ve got poofy roots and smooth ends. Products that work on the bottom, don’t work on the curly part. So now you gotta find a product that works with BOTH textures.. But as you stick with it, you find a way to deal, and all is calm….

Then you do your chop… And all HELL breaks loose!!! Your hair looks dry, not weighed down by the relaxed ends your curls look different. There may be no real curls to speak of! And your product that worked on both textures? Sh*t you may as well toss all that crap cause it is just doing NOTHING now!!!  It’s terrible!! You’ve researched and searched, but still it’s very difficult! Don’t worry though. You’ll get it. Soon your hair is use to being natural, your moisture levels are up, you’ve found your products and techniques, and you are looking FIERCE!!

Then…. It grows on you… It gets longer and more settled… And some of the products don’t work anymore… But worry not, you just take those out and you’re probably fine…..

Then two products don’t work together… One makes your hair hard and dry and dull and just NO!!!  The other makes it oily or hard or something.. And it’s just… WRONG! You’re shedding, your hair is tangled. Your TWA only took 10 minutes to wash and detangle, now it’s taking you an HOUR to do what took 10 minutes just a few months ago. You just wanna go hide, or chop again…. Or go back to the creamy crack (relaxing.) And it just get’s WORSE WITH EACH PASSING WEEK!!!  You may cope by putting it away. Just braiding it up and wearing a wig, or straightening it with heat. Or just twisting/braiding it up and wrapping it away.. But you DO cope and come out the other side.

Congrats!! You just made it through the awkward phase! So it’s all smooth sailing now, right? Your products are working well, your hair has grown out, looking good, you’re getting complements. You are doing well Diva!!!

But now… Products are STILL failing.. Now you don’t freak out anymore, you just mix them differently or eliminate what you don’t need. If you need more products, you research and make a careful decision on what to try. You know of trial and error and you go about it in an intelligent manner. You may find you need LESS products though you have MORE hair! How sweet is that?  Some products that had stopped working- or never worked for you- are starting to work better for you now maybe. Super sweet you didn’t toss them, eh?

When I first went natural in 2005, I just stopped relaxing. My last relaxer was April 30, 2005. I kinda knew I didn’t want to relax anymore with that relaxer, but I hadn’t really decided. My decision came around  July of that year. And I was going to grow my locs. My mind was made up. I had no idea what to do with my loose natural hair. It was so tangly and rough.. I just wanted to lock it up.. It seemed to be MADE for locs! I still believe my hair is the perfect hair for locs, because I have to literally do NOTHING to it for it to loc. I can grow fully mature locs in like 5 months! (See my Fotki, if you don’t believe me!) My hair just loves to groove on itself and that, along with shedding is what locs are. (And y’all hear me whining aobut my shedding!!) So, I started them August 27, 2005. And other than the fights with DH over them, it was so easy. I probably looked like a tore up CHICKEN to some people, but I was in that mind frame. Once I set my mind to something.. Fu*k you, I’m GOOD with it! LoL!! All I saw was my future locs and how awesome they were gonna be with each passing year. I even loved them when they were just little nappy balls in a fro! I… loved… my… HAIR! And it was the first time that EVER happened. To this day, I do not regret starting my journey with locs. It may seem backwards, but it was perfect for me.

Fast forward 5 years, I started wondering what my loose hair was like. I mean, I’d seen it as a child but briefly before my mom presses it straight. She’d always said I had beautiful hair, and it was long and thick. I wanted that back.. So, in April of 2011, I started the process of picking them out. It took an hour per loc, as they were about 18″+ long by now. It was tedious, but on May 21 I picked my last loc. I had 9 left, but I just chopped those. I couldn’t sit for another 9 hours picking. My hands hurt too bad, and no body else was ending my locs. So, I finished it.

And now the FUN began.. It was not like my locs. My locs were instantly easy. But my loose hair, in addition to being oddly shaped due to the chopping of the back locs, was a pickle. But I was up for it. DH hated my new cut because it was uneven and oddly shapped, but I kept trimming and shaping it up. Finally I had a cut. He said it looked like a boy, but I liked it.. I felt it was cute. My curls were pretty nice, though my hair was short the first time in years. Still it was so easy. I just wash, condition, quickly detangle and put my products in. Very easy… I’d leave some Aussie in and oil, then gel.. Later I added a lotion to the mix.. Made my hair white as hell, but it dried clear.

Then my hair was getting longer. I really didn’t notice it much, but others did. What I DID notice is with each passing month my hair was harder to detangle and used MUUUUUCH more conditioner. I couldn’t do my little style anymore, so I went to the puff. And the puff worked well. It is STILL my go to style. But now my products were working ok, but I decided to start eliminating products. the lotion was the first to go, my hair was instantly better… It just wasn’t doing what I thought it was supposed to do. So out it went.

Then one day.. It just came to me.. My gel is a curl activator. When I actually had the process in my hair, I used this product alone. I may grease my scalp, but my hair was just the gel.. And I tried it. (No scalp greasing!)… And my hair… Was… BEAUTIFUL!! Shiny, had movement, perfect curls. I was FLOORED!! And I stopped leaving in conditioner and just using gel.. No oil actually at first. But there was still an issue. STICKINESS!!! So I was rinsing every 2 days or so to try to cut down on that. And it was working, but my hair started to dry out. Honestly, my gel is so water soluable it CAN be completely rinsed away with just water for the most part. With it was my moisture. So I had to find a better way.

Then I was on Naturally Curly and read a tip from another Naturalista. She said she put oil over her activator to keep it from drying out. So I said… I’m gonna try that…

BAM! No stickiness!!! For some reason, it even dried faster! My curls were perfectly formed and no stickiness!!!! HEAVEN!!

And I’ve been doing this every since. My hair loves it, it’s growning.. Even starting to hang a little bit! And all this came from a decision to stop relaxing.. My Rebel evolved from a permed blog full of petroleum products.. To this beautiful natural fluffy fro you see today..

And this is when you get cocky.. You’ve got it now.. I’m coming up on a year loose.. But I’m sure Rebel is still growing and evolving….

I just hope I can evolve with her. 😀

OK.. Done rambling.. :p

Day Two… Er… One…

WHATEVER!! The day I rinsed the conditioner out of my hair!! LoL!! As you know, or maybe not yesterday, I washed my hair with White Rain Naturals in Apple Blossom, and detangled/conditioned/deep conditioned with the Tresemme Moisture Rich conditioner. Now the White Rain worked really well on cleaning my hair and scalp, but not stripping my hair. It left my hair feeling pretty soft after. The Tresemme did a pretty good job with detangling and what not. I did have a little bit of a struggle, but I think it was more my technique than the conditioner. It’s like I went into it wrong or something. LoL! But it did a pretty good job of giving me enough slip to detangle with. I put my hair in twists as I usually do, though I put more than usual. I have noticed my hair is thicker on the ends for some reason than it is at the roots.. Well, of course that would be impossible. My hair is bushy on the ends and smoother at the roots- anyway, it makes my twists come loose on the end, so I made smaller twists than usual.. Not even important. LoL! ANYWAY!!! I’m all off track. I twisted it up and covered with my plastic cap and bonnet as usual and off to sleep I went.

I won’t lie.. I was impressed or scared.. It went back and forward. I mean… This Tresemme stuff might be disolving my hair!! It was feeling pretty soft.. Like my twists felt very soft and squishy under the cap.. y’all laugh, but I’m pretty sure somebody out there has been there. LoL! Trying new products is damn scary and we Naturalistas are always paranoid about our curls ANYWAY.. So some thoughts ran through my mind. But I left it alone.

After a night and an evening of touching my little twists under my cap, I decided to rinse the conditioner out. I don’t think I should leave conditioner in my hair covered in plastic more than a day, (I DON’T THINK I SHOULD.. If you like that, good for you. Do what works.. I just didn’t want to.) and I was going to wash clothes anyway. (That raggedy bastard is STILL not working. The repair man has been here.. Well ONCE, but he was supposed to show up 3 times and it’s scheduled again for tomorrow. Hopefully my wash house days are numbered!!)I figured I’d rinse it all out and throw a little gel in and go.

My hair was soft… It felt really soft.. Well, not excessively soft, but it was soft. It’s still soft. It feels nice and the smell is pretty nice, if drugstore-y.. It’s tolerable. I wouldn’t say I was floored or anything, but it did perform well. With all the cones my hair should be WELL protected, that’s for sure.. LoL! I’m not really happy about all the cones, but I do think this conditioner is a  good one to keep on stand by..

BUT.. I think I need to back off  of overnight conditioning. Not stop, but do it less often. It may be causing my hair to become over conditioned and break off. I notice when I rinse my hair, there is hair just rinsing away. It is so… WEIRD. I rinse and hair comes out with the water.. Not more than the 100 strands or whatever, but.. I don’t know.. It just kinda weirds me out. LoL! Maybe I’ll try letting it sit for a few hours then rinse.. Then again, I use to do that and it just didn’t seem the conditioner was getting into my hair. I am very low porosity and it takes a long time for moisture to get into my hair. So I don’t know what to do about that. I’ll figure it out eventually. This is a journey. 🙂

Anyway, My hair is still very soft. It pretty much feels like it did with the Suave Almond and Shea Butter, and actually like it does with Aussie.. I’m starting to think as long as it’s not a protein conditioner, my hair is gonna respond pretty much the same to whatever conditioner I use. I may get a little more softness with one a little more coating with another, but I think they are gonna pretty much all perform the same. Which is good, because I know I don’t have to spend $50 on a conditioner because it will perform like a $3 one. So I take that as a “W”. 😀

Far as cowashing.. I don’t think I’d cowash with this exclusively because of all the cones. I mean there are at least 3 cones/xanes at the front of the ingredients list, so this stuff would definitely build up without a sulfate strip them off. I mean if you cowash 3 weeks out of the month, then shampoo you might be ok. Me I use sulfates, so I’m good. But as I may or may not have said, I’m not really happy about all the cones. But I’m not totally opposed to them if the product works and I’m stripping them off every wash. AND I’m not experiencing any dryness from them coating my hair. As long as all that’s good, so am I.

So, as of now, I’d buy this again. I think I’d buy this over the Suave because it gave me shedding, but a little less.. BUT as for price, I’d go with the Suave A&SB. I’m quite sure I can find that for under $2 if I shop around. But Tresemme is definitely in the game. 🙂

And that’s it.. Until next wash day. 🙂

White Rain Naturals Shampoo (Apple blossom)

Price: I bought a Case 4 years ago for $12, so that’s around $2 a bottle, but I’m sure it can be found for under a buck. ($1)

This product is not new, but I couldn’t remember if I ever reviewed it or not, so I’m gonna do it now. LoL! I actually bought this product for DH.. A LOT of this product.. A small case of 6 bottles. Now DH washes his hair whenever and doesn’t have much of it, so this would last him a LIFETIME! I bought it for him because he said when he use to use it, it seemed to be slowing his hair loss and he likes the smell of it. So I hunted and shopped around until I found him a case of it for about $12. This was about 4 years ago, and we still have it. I’ve used it a few times on my hair, but was still listening to the hype that I need a “better” shampoo, so I used it, liked it, but decided to move on..

Until now. I’m back on it and I am happy with it. First thing, the smell is divine! It smells like crisp green apples and has a vibrant green colour to boot. Being in a clear bottle, I must say it all looks rather clean and  well… NATURAL. The bottles are 18 oz bottles and you get so much lather from like a tablespoon of the stuff that it will last the thickest head a year per bottle! It’s not a sulfate free shampoo, but I’m not following curly girl anymore, so that’s fine for now. It doesn’t really have any cones, but does have “nones” at the very end of the ingredient list. It actually contains fruit extracts and (for some reason.) sugarcane extract. I just love when products use actual foods and they are not at the bottom of the list. Now this product was from years ago, so the formula may have changed since I bought it, and probably since DH was buying it. (He was getting that little white bottle it use to come in. I use to love it  in peaches n cream. Smelled YUMMY!) But it works really well. My hair didn’t feel stripped or overly dry, it was soft and fluffy.Which I like in a shampoo.PLUS, no excess shedding after I lathered up.. My hair with the new stuff isn’t really shedding much- Well, THIS week it didn’t, but I’ll post that in another post. 🙂

This review isn’t gonna be lone, because what to say? It’s a sulfate shampoo that smells like apple scented heaven that DH feels stops hair loss. Simple stuff. :p Will I repurchase this? YES I plan to buy another case if I can find it and maybe I’ll look for the peach as well. Which I will review.. LoL!!

What can I say.. The stuff is effective, non drying, and smells wonderful. 🙂 A keeper..
